Dog Fighting?
The only thing that comes to mind when I hear about the Michael Vick dog fighting situation is..Why?? Why would anyone partake in an act as gruesome as dog fighting? I just don't understand. The thought breeding and training dogs to essentially kill each other is unimaginable and to me incomprehensible. I understand Vick was only indicted and in America you're innocent until proven guilty, but I don't see any way Vick didn't at least know what was going on at a house that he owns. Numerous people have come forward and said that Vick has been heavily involved in dog fighting for several years. I think there will be enough witnesses and evidence to convict him. I don't care if it's Michael Vick or Joe Nobody, if you're involved in organized dog fighting you should rot in jail. Is Vick guilty in the court of public opinion? I say yes.

I've followed the Michael Vick dog fighting case from the beginning and have deeveloped a number of opinions regarding the situation.
First of all, I am a middle aged white man who doesn't understand a lot about the "hip hop" culture which a lot of these young atheletes are all about. I do not understand why a grown man would wear his blue jeans half way down his backside, I don't understand all the tatoos, or the lip rings, nose rings or holes in your ear the size of a dime. I don't understand having an entourage or possee. I don't understand why one would go to a strip club with $81,000 in cash and make it rain and think they are going to get their money back. Finally, I don't understand why a man making millions would put themselves in a position to lose everything when they have the world in their hands.
With that said, I truely believe Michael Vick had no idea what he was doing was wrong. OK, he knew it was wrong, but prison-I don't think so. I'm probably one of the few who thinks Vick should not go to jail. I know he killed a few dogs and that is without question incomprehensible, but I still think jail time should have been thought through. I think the judge should give him an option. Vick is obviously going to be out of the league a minimum of 3 years. Why not let him play instead of going to jail? 80% of all revenue he makes, salary and endorsement, money is put into a fund and is distributed out to a variety of charities, including the Humane Society and other charities dealing with animal rights. This would allow him enough money to live his life, but be put in a situation where these charities would raise enough money to do some quality work in their respective communities.
Now that Vicks been convicted and has agreed to talk, it will be interesting to see what other prominent atheletes are involved. I would guess a minimum of two per NFL team and at least one per NBA team are involved somewhat in dog fighting. It is popular among the young hip hop crowd and we don't want to see it or acknowledge it.
The days leading up to his sentencing will be interesting to say the least. Vick continued to lye until he was backed into a corner with no options. He will serve his time and attempt a comeback in the NFL in three years at the league minimum which will probably be somewhere around $500K. We should all be so lucky.
I guess I'll never understand how a man can be a $100 million man and end up broke. I guess I should have read Mike Tysons book.
